Having a Social Media Marketing Plan for Twitter is important for all companies/brands. Here are some of the best practices to engage your audience more successfully:

Listen and observe – Learn what other businesses are doing on Twitter and develop a content marketing strategy based on your company/brands. You can find competitors and view conversations using search.twitter.com. When you see how other businesses interact with customers and what types of content they share, you can try testing similar tactics to see what your followers want to see.

Use the 80/20 principle – 80% of your Tweets should focus on driving interactions with your followers, such as Retweets, replies, and favorites. Once you position yourself, you can mix in offers, promotions, and information that lead customers back to your website.

Keep Posts Short – Tweets around 100 characters allow for people to RT and add their own comments

Use #hashtags – These enable you to expand your reach beyond your followers by reaching out to individuals who are specifically interested in a particular topic

Timing – The best time to tweet is in the afternoon. Mobile users are 119% more likely to use Twitter during the day but mornings are for work. Days of the week vary for engagement rates: B2C companies see 1% more engagement on the weekends and B2B see better engagement MondayFriday.

Include Links – Put your key message followed by a link to lead people to your website for more information. This is also useful for tracking and analytics.

Develop relationships with reporters, bloggers, news media and public relations people on Twitter to get them interested in your company and to be seen as a resource when they are looking for resources for stories.
